When to Visit Northern Portugal: A Month by Month Guide

The short answer: May, June, and September are the sweet spot. But the longer answer is more interesting, because northern Portugal rewards visitors in every month if you know what to expect.

The Minho Coast has a distinct personality in each season. Summer is warm and social. Autumn brings the harvest and golden light. Winter is wild, green, and surprisingly mild. Spring erupts in wildflowers before the rest of Europe has finished with rain.

Here is what each month looks like.

January and February

Temperature: 8 to 14 degrees. Cool, not cold. Snow falls occasionally in the Serra de Geres mountains but almost never on the coast.

Rain: This is the wettest period. Expect rain on roughly half the days. When it rains, it can be heavy. When it stops, the light is extraordinary.

Crowds: Zero. You will have restaurants, beaches, and trails entirely to yourself.

Why come now: Winter food. Sarrabulho, cozido a portuguesa, roasted chestnuts, and the hearty dishes that define Minho cuisine are at their peak. Wine producers have more time for visitors. Hotel and villa rates are at their lowest. The landscape is at its greenest. If you enjoy walking in wild weather, the coastal paths are spectacular.

Best for: Food lovers, wine enthusiasts, couples seeking solitude, remote workers, and anyone who finds beauty in a moody Atlantic winter.

March and April

Temperature: 11 to 17 degrees. Spring arrives progressively. March can still feel like winter. April warms quickly.

Rain: Decreasing. Expect rain on a third of the days, mostly in showers rather than sustained downpours.

Crowds: Still very quiet. Easter brings a brief influx of domestic visitors.

Why come now: Wildflowers begin covering the hillsides. The national park is green and lush. Outdoor dining begins on sunny days. Prices remain low. Easter celebrations in the Minho are genuine cultural events, not tourist performances.

Best for: Hikers, nature lovers, photographers, and early-season surfers (the swells are still strong).

May and June

Temperature: 16 to 24 degrees. May is comfortably warm. June starts to feel like summer.

Rain: Minimal. May might deliver a few days of rain. June is largely dry.

Crowds: Quiet in May. June begins to see more visitors but remains far from crowded.

Why come now: This is the first sweet spot. The landscape is still green from spring rain but the sun is strong. Beaches are empty. The ocean is warming. Outdoor activities are at their best. Restaurant terraces open. Prices have not yet reached peak season. The evening light lasts until 9pm and later.

Best for: Everyone. Families, couples, groups, surfers, hikers, foodies. May and June deliver the widest range of good experiences with the fewest compromises.

July and August

Temperature: 22 to 28 degrees. Warm days, cool Atlantic breezes. Occasionally touches 30+ degrees during heat waves, but the ocean keeps the coast cooler than the interior.

Rain: Rare. Perhaps two or three rainy days across both months.

Crowds: This is peak season. Portuguese families arrive from Lisbon and Porto. Some international visitors discover the coast. But "crowded" in the Minho means "you might need to reserve a restaurant on Saturday night." Compared to the Algarve, Alicante, or the Cote d'Azur, the Minho remains remarkably uncrowded.

Why come now: Beach season at its peak. Surfing in warm conditions. Festivals and events throughout the region (Romaria da Sra. d'Agonia in Viana do Castelo in August is spectacular). Long, warm evenings. Private pools are at their most useful.

Best for: Families, beach lovers, festival goers. Book properties early as peak season demand is strongest.

Our tip: If you can choose, the first two weeks of July and the last two weeks of August are slightly less busy than mid-August, when Portuguese holidays concentrate.

September and October

Temperature: 17 to 25 degrees in September, 14 to 20 degrees in October.

Rain: September is largely dry. October brings the first autumn rains, usually in the second half.

Crowds: Minimal. Schools resume in September and the coast empties quickly.

Why come now: This is the second sweet spot, and arguably the best time to visit. September has summer weather without summer crowds. October brings the grape harvest across the Vinho Verde region (a deeply atmospheric time to visit wineries). The light in September and October is warmer and more golden than summer. Surf swells intensify. Restaurant prices drop. Properties are easier to book.

Best for: Wine lovers (harvest season), surfers (stronger swells), couples (romantic quiet), hikers (perfect temperatures), photographers (extraordinary light), and anyone who prefers fewer people.

November and December

Temperature: 10 to 16 degrees. Mild. Hard frosts are rare on the coast.

Rain: Increasing. November can be wet. December varies.

Crowds: Very quiet. Christmas and New Year bring a brief domestic tourism spike.

Why come now: The green season returns. Autumn colours in the Lima valley and Geres mountains. New wine (Vinho Verde Novo) arrives in November. Christmas in Portuguese villages is genuine, warm, and family-centred. Some of our properties offer significantly reduced rates.
