Douro Valley
A hilltop quinta with its own vineyard, a heated pool and wood fires

Quinta do Pinho stands on a hilltop with its own vineyard running below it, which is the arrangement most people picture when they imagine the Douro and rarely get. Six bedrooms and nine and a half bathrooms sleep fourteen, and the house is old enough to have a history and worked-on enough to be comfortable.

The pool is heated and positioned for the view rather than for shelter. Indoors there are wood-burning fireplaces — actual wood, with guards, not a gas approximation — which is the right way to spend a February evening at this altitude. Mountain views run in every direction the vineyard does not.

A hilltop position in the Douro means two things: the light, which arrives early and leaves late, and the quiet. Port quintas and river landings are within driving distance, and the UNESCO terraces that make this valley unlike anywhere else in Portugal start at the garden wall.

Quinta do Pinho sleeps up to 14 guests across 6 bedrooms with 9.5 bathrooms.
