Quinta da Tojeira

Quinta da Tojeira is a working farmhouse's worth of building — nine bedrooms, eighteen guests — reworked with a modern hand and, crucially, given an indoor pool. In a valley whose best months are shoulder-season, an indoor pool and a heated one outside change what the house is good for.

There is a spa with a sauna, an indoor jacuzzi, a games room with billiards, and an indoor fireplace. Mountain views run around the property. The scale suits a group that wants to take over somewhere completely: one long table, one kitchen, and enough separate space that eighteen people are not permanently in each other's way.

The Douro's historic farmhouses were built for the harvest, with thick walls and deep shade, and that inheritance is what keeps this house cool in August and solid in January.
