Douro Valley
A heritage house above the river, with a games room and a cellar's worth of wine storage

Casa de Caiz is an old Douro house that has been brought forward without being stripped of what made it worth keeping. Stone and timber remain; the river and mountain views were always the point, and they still are. Six bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, ten guests.

The private pool sits in the garden with the valley falling away beyond it. There is a games room for the hours between lunch and dinner, an indoor fireplace for the evenings, and a wine cooler that will hold whatever the surrounding quintas persuade you to buy. A dedicated workspace means a longer stay does not have to be a holiday only.

The Douro rewards slowness. Port houses and vineyards sit within easy reach, the river runs below, and the roads here were built to follow the contours rather than beat them. The house is set up for a group that wants a base rather than a series of hotel rooms — one long table, one kitchen, one garden, and the valley doing the rest.

Casa de Caiz sleeps up to 10 guests across 6 bedrooms with 6.5 bathrooms.
