This is our signature Minho experience — the one our guests rate highest and book again on their next trip. It combines the three things that make northern Portugal unforgettable: wild nature, extraordinary food, and local knowledge you cannot find in any guidebook.
Your guide — born and raised in the Minho — leads you through oak and chestnut forests in the Serra d'Arga to a hidden waterfall and natural lagoon that only locals know. The hike is moderate (about 40 minutes each way, well-marked trail), and the reward is a swim in crystal-clear mountain water surrounded by nothing but forest and birdsong.
The experience culminates at a traditional mountain restaurant that has no website, no Instagram, and no signs on the road. The table is set with broa de milho, chouriço assado, queijo da serra, local honey, and regional wine. It is the kind of meal that makes you understand why the Minho is Portugal's best-kept culinary secret.
Everything is included: snacks during the hike, the full traditional meal with wine pairing, and a polaroid souvenir. Groups are kept small — never more than 10 guests — so the experience feels personal and unhurried.
Your guide collects you from your Portugal Active villa or the meeting point at Praça da República in Viana do Castelo. Coffee and a quick intro in the van on the way to Serra d'Arga.
A 30-minute drive into the mountains. Your guide shares stories about the region and stops for photos at viewpoints over the Lima Valley.
A moderate hike through ancient oak and chestnut forest. The trail follows a stream uphill, crossing small stone bridges, until you hear the waterfall before you see it.
Arrive at the waterfall and natural pool. The water is crystal clear and refreshingly cool. Swim, float, or jump from the rocks. This is the moment for the polaroid.
A walk to a restaurant that has no website, no Instagram, and no road sign. The table is set: broa de milho, chouriço assado, queijo da serra, local honey, presunto, and a regional wine pairing. The owner is a friend of the guide's family.
Full, happy, and carrying a polaroid. The relaxed drive back takes about 30 minutes. Your guide drops you at your villa door.

Jorge was born in the village at the foot of Serra d'Arga and has been exploring these mountains since he could walk. His knowledge and passion for the region make every trip unforgettable. He is friendly, approachable, and creates a comfortable environment throughout. Guests consistently call him out by name as the highlight of their experience. He speaks Portuguese, English, and Spanish, carries a polaroid camera, and has a knack for finding the perfect swimming spot depending on the season and water level.

Moderate. The terrain varies from dense forests to crystal-clear streams with some rocky sections. Good sports shoes with grip are essential. Most travellers can participate.
No problem. The swim is optional. Many guests sit by the lagoon, enjoy the waterfall view, and take photos instead.

Children aged 8 and above who are comfortable with moderate hiking are welcome. The trail has some rocky sections.
