About this experience
This is the Minho's best-kept adrenaline secret. Deep inside Peneda-Gerês National Park, the Varziela River has carved a granite canyon that few tourists ever see — a world of crystal pools, natural slides, and vertical drops framed by ancient oak forest.
Under the supervision of guides certified by the International Canyoning Commission (CIC), you will swim through narrow gorges, slide down smooth granite chutes, jump into turquoise pools, and rappel alongside waterfalls. Every element is optional — your guide reads the group and adapts the route so beginners feel challenged but safe, while experienced canyoneers get their adrenaline fix.
All technical equipment is provided: high-performance wetsuit, harness, helmet, canyoning shoes, and waterproof bags. Groups are kept small — never more than 12 — to ensure safety and a personal experience. Afterwards, there is nothing quite like the post-canyon glow: exhausted, exhilarated, and already planning to come back.
The season runs from April to October. Water levels and temperature vary — spring offers bigger flows and more dramatic waterfalls, while summer provides warmer water and a more relaxed pace.

What to expect

Villa pickup and drive to Gerês
Your private driver collects you from your Portugal Active villa. The scenic drive through the Minho countryside to Peneda-Gerês National Park takes approximately 45 minutes.

Equipment fitting and safety briefing
Meet your CIC-certified guide at the canyon base. Get fitted with your wetsuit, harness, helmet, and canyoning shoes. Full safety briefing covering techniques for swimming, jumping, sliding, and rappelling.
Stop 3·10:15
Enter the canyon — swimming and sliding
Wade into the Varziela River and begin the descent. The first section features smooth granite slides and waist-deep pools — the perfect warm-up. Your guide demonstrates each technique before you try it.
Stop 4·11:00
Jumps, rappels, and the main waterfall
The canyon deepens. Natural jumps range from 2 to 8 metres — all optional. The highlight: a rappel alongside a cascading waterfall into a deep turquoise pool. Pure adrenaline, total safety.
Stop 5·12:30
Exit the canyon and return
Emerge from the canyon with that unmistakable post-adventure glow. Change into dry clothes, review your photos, and enjoy the drive back to your villa.

Jorge is a certified canyoning guide with the International Canyoning Commission and has been exploring the canyons of Gerês for over a decade. He knows every pool, every jump, and every hidden passage in the granite. His speciality is reading groups — adapting the route and pace so that first-timers feel safe and thrill-seekers get pushed. Off the water, Jorge is also a hiking guide and a passionate advocate for the preservation of Peneda-Gerês National Park.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the experience for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. In case of severe weather or unsafe water levels, we reschedule or offer a full refund.
Do I need previous canyoning experience?

Not at all. Our guides teach every technique on the spot. All jumps, slides, and rappels are optional — you decide your comfort level.
Can my children join?

The minimum age is 14 years old. Younger children may enjoy our SUP or horseback riding experiences instead.
What if I can't swim well?

Basic swimming ability is required. The wetsuit provides significant buoyancy, and your guide is always within reach. If you are not confident in open water, we recommend another experience.
What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop the experience — you will be wet anyway. Heavy rain or unsafe water levels may require rescheduling. We monitor conditions daily and contact you the evening before if there is any change.
